What is a hostile work environment?

On one hand, there is no law requiring that employers be nice, or even courteous. However, if behavior in the workplace is so extreme that an employee cannot reasonably perform their duties or be productive, it is considered a hostile work environment. As indicated above, simply discourteous behavior does not constitute a hostile work environment, it must be extreme in the eyes of the judge and court.
