Hospitals across the country caught overcharging Medicare

by Administrator 11. January 2011 04:36

A qui tam lawsuit was recently settled with seven hospitals in Texas, South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, Alabama and Mississippi.  The hospitals were accused of overcharging Medicare for patients receiving a type of back surgery called "kyphoplasty".  In total, the hospitals agreed to pay the federal government $6.3 million to settle the lawsuit.

An attorney representing the whistleblowers stated, "These hospitals chose to keep kyphoplasty patients overnight for simply for their financial needs rather than for their patients' needs.  In most cases, kyphoplasty can be done safely as an outpatient procedure, which costs Medicare much less than overnight stay".

With 25 other hospitals already settling in the case, the federal government has received $101 million from hospitals overcharging Medicare in kyphoplasty procedures.
