Victoria firefighters terminated for displaying nude photos

by Administrator 11. April 2011 01:20

Two Victoria firefighters were recently terminated from their positions with the fire department after a complaint was filed that they had been displaying nude and sexually suggestive photographs in the station.  After the complaint was filed in March, investigators looked into it and found that the firefighters had a montage of around 10 photos of nude men posing provacatively on display at the department.

"Harassment doesn't stem from sexual attraciton, as is commonly thought.  It usually stems from a desire on the part of the harasser to demonstrate power over the victim, to show that they have the ability to intimidate, demean, denigrate, or shame another individual," said a University of Houston-Victoria criminal justice professor.

The city has protected the identities of the two firefighters.  City officials noted that the two were fired for violating Victoria's conduct policies.

Port Lavaca woman files sexual harassment suit

by Administrator 15. March 2011 00:32

On March 3rd, a former employee of Basic Energy Services filed a sexual harassment lawsuit against the company in South Texas federal court.  In the lawsuit, Tonia Martinets, a former staff assistant at Basic Energy Services, claims that her immediate supervisor, Eduardo Ortiz, subjected her to sexual harassment in the workplace.

Furthermore, the suit states that the harassment began in August of 2008.  Ortiz is accused of inquiring about Martinets' dating history, making sexually suggestive comments toward her and asking her to bring in sexy pictures for him.  After her complaints were ingnored by the company's South Texas Region Human Resources manager, Martinets filed a complaint with Basic Energy Services' corporate office.

Two days after filing the complaint with corporate, Martinets was terminated from her position.  The EEOC has concluded that Martinets and other female employees were subjected to sexual harassment by Ortiz and that management terminated her in retaliation for issuing a complaint.

Dallas deputy constable wins $35,000 in sexual harassment suit

by Administrator 15. February 2011 09:09

This past Friday, Dallas County deputy constable Lois Martin won $35,000 in a sexual harassment lawsuit she filed against a former deputy.  According to court documents, Martin was the victim of sexual harassment from former deputy Mario Guevara for 8 months beginning in 2008.

Martin was trained by Guevara after being transferred from the Precinct 5 constable's office to the office's civil division.  The lawsuit stated that Guevara began sexually harassing Martin almost immediately after transferring to the office's civil division by touching her and frequently commenting on her body and the way she smelled.  Martin reported that Guevara continued to harass her even after he was no longer her supervisor.

Martin said that she had initially feared reporting the harassment because Guevara was a friend of the county's new constable.  However, after taking medical leave for the emotional distress the harassment caused her and receiving suggestive and inappropriate text messages, Martin felt she had sufficient evidence and filed a report with human resources.

Director of Texas Film Commission resigns after sexual harassment claims

by Administrator 1. December 2010 03:59

Last month, the director of the Texas Film Commission, Bob Hudgins, announced his resignation after several claims of sexual harassment were filed against him.  Hudgins' position is a part of Governor Rick Perry's office.

Hudgins was accused of sexual harassment by an employee last year and investigations revealed similar incidents.  In addition, recent investigations found that he may have practiced gender discrimination when hiring.  Hudgins originally filed his resignation September 1st to be effective September 30th, but this was pushed back until November 30th after the November 2nd election.

Investigators from the Austin American-Statesman found evidence that Hudgins sexually harassed a female subordinate repeatedly between 2005 and 2009.  The female subordinate reported several incidents of Hudgins kissing her on the cheek and neck and continuously making some type of physical contact.

by Administrator 23. October 2009 01:18

While the workplace typically involves many people working together, people still have certain rights in terms of how they are treated. One common mistreatment is sexual harassment.

While sexual harassment can be inflicted on both genders, it typically occurs against women. It includes any type of behavior in which one person in the workplace makes intentional and unwelcome sexual advannces, inappropriate sexual requests, and other offensive behavior of a sexual nature.
