A former manager with Vitas Healthcare Corp. recently filed a qui tam lawsuit at the U.S. District Court in Dallas, claiming the hospice provider defrauded the federal government's Medicare program.

The manager worked with Vitas in San Antonio and if his claims prove true, he will receive damages as a whistleblower under the False Claims Act.

Vitas is the nation's largest hospice healthcare provider and has been critized by the government for doubling the number of Medicare patients they care for over the past 10 years.  According to the mananger, Vitas conspires with health insurance providers to have more Medicare patients enter their facilities even if the patients aren't dying.

The company is suspected of defrauding the government of "hundreds of millions of dollars."
