Texas job loss numbers for 2009 revised

by Administrator 4. March 2010 03:50

While previous economic data indicated that Texas lost 276,000 payroll jobs in 2009, that original estimate may have been 53,000 short of the actual number. According to a report released by the Texas Workforce Commission, last year's job losses in 2009 totaled about 329,000.

The revision is not unusual, as such reports often revise their figures as a result of surveys. Much of the extra reported loss likely occurred in Dallas and Houston.

What to do if you suspect fraud in your company

by Administrator 25. February 2010 06:40

Many organizations implement a system of internal controls to prevent fraud. However, these controls often contain deficiencies that miss certain frauds.

To compensate for these deficiencies, companies partially rely on their employees to detect fraud. For this reason, companies implement whistleblower procedures so that employees can report the fraud to the proper authority and not fear punishment.

If you suspect fraud in your company and have questions about your whistleblower protections, contact the Houston employment lawyers of the Ross Law Group at 800-634-8042.

Manufacturing jobs continue to grow in Texas

by Administrator 23. February 2010 03:49

Manufacturing in Texas decreased in January compared to previous months. According to a report released by the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, the factory production index dropped.

The drop, however, did not go into negative territory, meaning that Texas manufacturing output is still growing. The growing manufacturing sector could lead to more jobs for Texas residents.

How do companies try to quiet whistleblowers

by Administrator 19. February 2010 07:03

In the past ten years, employees who report fraud or wrongdoing have received a number of legal protections. These protections are to decrease the chances of fraud in the workplace.

That being said, employees still face numerous pressures not to report fraud or wrongdoing. For instance, if an employee discovers that his or her employer is receiving kickbacks from a vendor, that employer may attempt to pressure or bribe them into not reporting the kickback.

Employees, though, should be aware that their employer cannot fire them for being a whistleblower and that receiving bribes will make them complicit in the kickback scheme.

How to mitigate the risks associated with termination

by Administrator 19. February 2010 06:59

Employees are not always terminated because of bad performance or personal misconduct. In some cases, employees are let go because their company has been acquired by another company.

When this occurs, fired employees are often upset that they lost their job for no good reason. To protect themselves, employees should attempt to negotiate termination agreements. These agreements give employees pay, benefits, and other provisions if they lose their job because of a merger or buyout.

If you or anyonoe you know has questions about employee contracts, contact the Houston employment attorneys of the Ross Law Group at 800-634-8042.

Can your employer file you during FMLA time?

by Administrator 11. February 2010 04:05

Individuals may not be fired during their FMLA time. This provision gives employees the security that taking FMLA time will not affect their job status.

However, once FMLA time ends, employees should stay in contact with their employer about their job status. If the employee is unable to perform normal work functions and the company has not light duty work available, then the company may be able to fire the employee.

If you or anyone you know has questions about your FMLA time, contact the Houston employement lawyers of the Ross Law Group at 800-634-8042.

What to do if your employer forces you to commit fraud

by Administrator 5. February 2010 05:11

Many companies implement controls to prevent mangers from committing fraud. However, managers can sometimes circumvent these controls by forcing lower-level employees to commit fraud.

For instance, managers may attempt to manipulate accounting entries by forcing employees in accounts receiavable to adjust journal entries. If employees refuse, managers may threaten to fire them. Employees, however, have some remedies by informing internal or external legal counsel of the alleged fraud.

If you or anyone you know has been forced to commit fraud, contact the Houston employment lawyers of the Ross Law Group at 800-634-8042.
