Why Businesses Like Younger Employees

Each fall and spring, recruiting fairs take over large spaces on college campuses across the country. These fairs are designed to attract young employees just starting out on their own in their first job. Many of these employees have minimal experience and little to recommend them to any company besides their college achievements and activities. Yet they are widely and wildly recruited because they are young.

Young employees are popular with companies for a variety of reasons. First of all, they are cheaper than their more experienced counterparts. Young employees are cheaper than their older counterparts because they have less work experience. The more jobs a person has, the more work experience the individual has. The more work experience, the higher “asking price” in terms of salary. Younger employees are clearly cheaper.

Another benefit of younger employees for a business' accounting is that they frequently are single individuals without families. This means that a company that foots some of the bill for health insurance for its employees will be asked to cover a larger portion for a family of four than for a household of one. At the same time they are being asked to insure more people, they are only getting productivity and effort out of one of those people on the insurance plan. This too makes younger employees cheaper.

Going along with being a single person is the idea that the employee will be more likely or willing to stay late and leave early since there are no obligations like soccer practice, band concerts, etc. that will pull the employee away from his or her desk before putting in a long workday.
