The National Labor Relations Board

The National Labor Relations Board is one of a number of federal organizations designed to protect employers and employees from each other. The National Labor Relations Board, or NLRB, is, however, an independent federal agency that is strictly designed to facilitate a healthy relationship between the private-sector employers and their employees.

The NLRB was part of the multitude of bills and Acts passed during President F.D. Roosevelt's New Deal of the 1930s. The agency was, at first, challenged by the business world as being unconstitutional as it appeared to have a very thin tie to the commerce clause. The Supreme Court however, in a continued effort to avoid court packing, decided to rule in favor of the act. While not the first act to survive, it was one of the most important.

Now that it is in practice, the NLRB is responsible for governing the relations between unions and employers in the private sector. The Act and the Board guarantee the right of all employees to organize and to enter into collective bargaining agreements with their employers. There are also a number of other protected actions that can exist with or without a union. In addition to guaranteeing rights, the Act and Board prohibit some actions by employers.

In addition to protecting employees from their employers, the NLRB is responsible for protecting employers from their employees. The Act contains a number of provisions to protect the commercial interests of an employer from any unfair actions committed by labor organizations. In this way, the NLRB works for both sides of the table in an effort to prevent the anger and resentment so common at the turn of the century.
