Texas Child Labor Laws
Historically it was not uncommon for children to be employed alongside their relatives. In many cases this was an economic necessity, but it prevented children from getting the education they deserve and the work was frequently dangerous. Now that education is compulsory for all children, there are strict laws in place over what type of work minors may do and when.
If you suspect you child may be employed in tasks or a line of work that are hazardous, you can take legal action against your child's employer to seek compensation and end their illegal practices. Call the Houston employment lawyers of the Ross Law Group today at 713-482-6910 to learn more.
Exemptions
In general children are prohibited from working, but there are certain exemptions that allow children to work under specific conditions. The most important stipulation is that the work must not interfere with the child's schoolwork. Children can't work during school hours and must always be enrolled in a school. They are also limited to at most 8 hours a day and cannot work late at night.
For any line of work, parental approval is necessary. Children can work in non-hazardous roles in businesses owned by their parents, or on the farm when school is not in session. With parental approval, they may also perform for film, radio, and screen.
Teenagers under 18 years of age can work more independently, but their duties are limited. Mining, manufacturing, warehouse work, and construction work are all prohibited. They are also prohibited from using heavy machinery and powerful kitchen equipment.
