Rules for Paying Employees

It is accepted that when a person puts in a day of work, he or she should be paid for the work that is done. There are two broad categories of employees, hourly and salaried. These two categories have different rules regarding how payment is determined. Salaried employees are subject to a few more rules in some cases than are hourly employees.

First of all, salaried employees do not generally receive overtime pay, but that doesn't mean it is impossible or nonexistent. Salaried employees, unlike their hourly counterparts, earn a set amount of money each paycheck for working. This is the regular salary.

On top of the base pay, salaried employees are generally given an allotment of sick, personal, and vacation days. These days start when a person has been employed with the company for X number of days. As long as the absences from the workplace do not exceed the allotted number of sick, etc. days, the employee will receive the full pay amount. Once the days have been used and the employee continues to be absent, pay can be deducted from the paycheck.

Partial days are a different story in many cases. Salaried employees are supposed to be paid for a full day's work, even if only part of the day is spent in the office. For example, if an employee comes into the office by 8 and then leaves at noon for whatever reason, that employee must still be paid for the entire day, even if there aren't personal days available.
