Combating Racism at Work Part I
Since the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 there have been great strides made against racially motivated workplace discrimination. Not only have legal protections been established and enforcement of their provisions improved, but the general social trend toward increased tolerance and rejection of formerly accepted practices has served to reinforce the creation of a new employment culture.
Yet despite these changes, occupational racism continues to be a very real problem. No longer are employers, supervisors, and co-workers likely to engage in overtly discriminatory practices, but instead they have adopted subtler – though equally illegal – behaviors.
The Houston employment lawyers of the Ross Law Group can help you to determine whether an act or ongoing element of your workplace environment may be in violation of the law. If so, we can help you to pursue the financial compensation to which you may be entitled. Contact us at 713-482-6910.
Recognition Reaps Responsibility
Aware that the problem of racial discrimination had not vanished but had rather taken a new shape, in 2006 the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission chose to establish new formal guidelines to clarify the scope of the existing laws. Among the recommendations contained in those guidelines was the suggestion that a broad recruiting net be cast so that the field of potential employees is not limited to groups that are not representatively diverse. Possible focuses of racial discrimination may be made plain by reference to an individual's:
- Hair
- Eye Shape
- Skin Color
- Cultural Heritage
- Grooming and Hygiene
- Dialectic Accent
- Relationship with a Person of a Specific Race
