Child Labor Laws
It is standard practice for students to seek part time jobs in an effort to become more independent and to make some money. However, it is important to make sure that you understand child labor laws in case you are ever subjected to illegal work conditions as a young person.
If you or someone you love has been the victim of a violation of child labor laws, you may be able to take legal action against the responsible party. Contact the Houston employment attorneys of the Ross Law Group at 713-482-6910 to speak to a qualified lawyer about your situation today.
Child Labor Law Specifics
There are both state and federal child labor laws in place to provide for the safety of young workers. Because laws may vary from state to state, having an overview of the more comprehensive labor laws is helpful. The Fair Labor Standards Act, FLSA, states that children aged 14 or 15:
- May not work during regular school hours
- May not work more than three hours per school day, eight hours per weekend day
- May not exceed 18 hours of work during a school week or 40 hours during a non-school week
- Are only allowed to work between 7am and 7 pm during the school year, and between 7am and 9pm during the summer months
Individuals that are 16 and 17 can work unlimited hours in jobs that are not hazardous, and once a person is 18, he or she can work unlimited hours in any position.
