Unprofessional Behavior in the Workplace
Unprofessional behavior is one of the biggest hindrances to productivity in the workplace. Increased
sales or production can get companies the results they are looking for, but without a communicative
and caring team behind it, these goals will only last a little while. Unprofessional behavior is any
behavior that aims to bring productivity, relationships, and professionalism down in the workplace,
whether intentional or unintentional.
Employees
Many times an unprofessional attitude goes unchecked or without confrontation. If an employer hires
an individual who seems to be socially suited for a place of work and up to par with other skills related
to the job, he or she expects the employee to perform these skills in the duration of his or her employment.
Many times this is not the case. Sometimes an employee will harass co-workers, perform tasks unrelated
to the job while on the clock, and underperform his or her duties. Co-workers may feel helpless in situations
such as these.
Employers
Employers may bring unprofessional behavior into the workplace as well. Employers may sometimes bring
much attention to his or herself, bring his or her personal life into the workplace, start rumors, take
non-threatening conversations and make them threatening, take a benign conversation and make it personal,
blackmail or intimidate employees, or threaten to use his or her credentials or reputation to terminate
an employee.
