Professionalism in the Workplace
Professionalism is more than having experience or being in a position of authority in the workplace.
Professionalism can be defined as the practice or behavior of character strengths and virtues aimed
at others in the workplace whether coworkers, employers, vendors, or other individuals an employer interacts
with while performing his or her duties at work.
Some common traits identified as being professional include:
- Respectful – Having someone act respectfully towards others, as well as being a person that others can
respect, can make for a positive work environment by allowing communication to flow smoothly through
all levels within a business and increase the ties between employees and result in better teamwork.
- Dependable – A great employer or employee will put him or herself aside to make themselves available
to someone else without expecting anything in return. This generates an understanding between business
partners that the business exists for the advancement of everybody.
- Cooperative – The willingness to work and work well with others demonstrates a joint-effort between
employees whose purpose concentrates on the work at hand and not personal items unrelated to work. This
makes for not only professional employees but a productive and professional work setting.
- Accountable – Being responsible for your actions and being able to report or justify a means of accomplishing
something demonstrates a willingness to take charge and will eventually lead to making better and stronger
decisions.
- Behavior/Attitude – Conducting yourself in a calm and productive way only leads to more constructive
attitudes and mature behavior among fellow coworkers.
A true professional deters from holding personal grudges and judgments, spreading rumors, mediocrity,
becoming involved with personal affairs, acting inappropriately, and ultimately reflecting poorly on
the workplace.
